During the large-scale riots that took place in Athens on February 28, the monument of Olympian Zeus, one of the most important historical landmarks of the city, was damaged. According to the Greek Ministry of Culture, as a result of the incident, a fence was broken and marble fragments from the pavement of the ancient temple were smashed.
The riots occurred during mass protests organized in memory of the 57 people killed in the train disaster in Tempi in 2023. According to authorities, hundreds of thousands of people took part in the protests.
The monument of Olympian Zeus is one of the key historical sites of the capital of Greece and an important part of the country’s cultural heritage.
