The Sao Paulo Zoo (Brazil) has introduced the public to a female polar bear named Nur, the first polar bear cub born on the South American continent. The baby was born on November 17, 2024, and spent the first few days with her mother in a specially created artificial "den", "MIR 24" reports.
Nur's parents were polar bears Aurora and Pilgrim, brought from Russia, who have been living in the Brazilian zoo for ten years.
Zoo staff suspected that Aurora was pregnant based on changes in her behavior: she began to tire more quickly, spent more time in the den, and had less contact with Pilgrim.
Experts explained that the separation of a pair of bears is natural behavior, since in nature polar bears are solitary animals, encountered only during the breeding season. The male does not participate in caring for the offspring.
It is noteworthy that Aurora was found as an orphaned bear cub on the Taimyr Peninsula and would not have been able to survive in the wild, while Pilgrim was born in captivity at the Kazan Zoo.
