The European Union has adopted updated rules for issuing driver's licenses. The key innovation will be the introduction of digital licenses, which citizens will be able to store on their mobile devices. It is planned that electronic driver's licenses will be available to all EU residents by 2030, euro-pulse.ru reports.

Digital driving licenses will be officially recognized in all EU member states, while citizens will still be able to obtain traditional plastic IDs. Both formats will be valid for 15 years.

The new legislation also introduces a mandatory two-year probationary period for new drivers, during which increased penalties for traffic violations will apply. In addition, EU countries are obliged to conduct systematic health checks for drivers.

These measures are part of the ambitious European Vision Zero programme, which aims to completely eliminate road fatalities in Europe by 2050.
