For the first time in the 135 years of the famous Parisian landmark’s existence, the names of female scientists will be engraved on the Eiffel Tower. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, together with SETE and the Femmes & Sciences association, initiated this project, pravilamag.ru reports.

Since the tower was erected in 1889, the names of 72 outstanding men of science have been immortalized in gold letters on the second tier, but there was not a single woman among them. To restore historical justice, the Parisian authorities decided to add the names of women who made a significant contribution to scientific progress.

A special scientific committee has been created to implement the project, which will include government officials, scientists, historical heritage specialists, Eiffel Tower historians and public activists. The committee will be tasked with selecting worthy candidates among female scientists and developing a technical solution that will integrate new names while preserving the historical integrity and architectural concept of Gustave Eiffel.

According to French media, the appearance of the names of female scientists on one of the most recognizable monuments in the world will be an important symbolic step in recognizing their contribution to world science.
