5 most recognizable and copied interior elements

The popularity of new collection of furniture has stay afloat for an average 2-3 years. However, there are “long livers” – iconic interior objects, age of which ranges from 10 years or more. These masterpieces are constantly copied by furniture manufacturers all over the world.

Stool 60 (Finland)

  • The year of creation is 1933.   
  • The designer is the Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto. Among the architectural projects: museums, universities, schools, churches, theaters, libraries and private homes throughout Finland.

Even after 89 years, a stool can be found in almost every interior. It was created by Alvar Aalto specifically for the furnishing of the city library in Vyborg.  

Some interesting facts about the stool:

  • the world's first piece of furniture made of steam-bent glued plywood;
  • the stool consists of 13 parts: 3 legs, 9 screws and 1 seat;
  • the L-shaped shape of the stool leg is patented;
  • the stool is still manufactured at the Artek factory in Finland, founded in 1935 by Alvar Aalto.

Egg Chair (Denmark)

  • The year of creation is 1958.   
  • The designer is Arne Jacobsen, the main architect of Denmark of the XX century and the founder of Danish functionalism.

Egg Chair was designed for the lobby and lounge area of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Jacobsen used a new technique – the inner shell of foam rubber was inside of the outer surface.

Progressive for those times, the shape of the chair protects from prying eyes and makes it possible to relax and feel in solitude.

Bean bag Sacco from Zanotta (Italy)

  • The year of creation is 1968.   
  • The designers are Piero Gatti, Franko Teodoro and Chezare Paolini.

A group of the above-mentioned young people was in the opposition movement of the 60s “Anti-design”. Creative Italians conceived a project – a pouf chair made of transparent PVC film, with liquid inside. However, this idea did not find a response and understanding among Italian furniture makers until the guys met Aurelio Zanotto, a genius in the world of furniture design.

The bean bag was modified, the PVC film was replaced with a durable fabric, and the liquid was replaced with lightweight foam plastic balls. Having received the name Sacco (from the Italian “bag”), the chair, produced in the brightest colors, becomes a symbol of the furniture revolution. The armchair is awarded, become a fashionable element of the interior in movies and TV programs, it is included in the collections the largest world museum in the world.

Floor lamp Arco Flos (Italy)

  • The year of creation is 1962.   
  • The designers are Achille and Pier Gicomo Castiglioni.

The Castiglioni brothers by the order of the Flos brand have created a home version of a street lamp. The Arco Flos floor lamp consists of a steel arc with movable elements for height, length and direction adjustment, as well as a base (weighing about 65 kg) made of white Carrara marble. For 60 years of its existence, the design of the floor lamp has not changed.       

Interesting facts include:

  • Arco Flos was the first item in the history of industrial design whose artistic value was recognized by an Italian court; 

  • The iconic floor lamp is often found in Hollywood movies.

Artichoke lamp (Denmark)

  • The year of creation is 1958.
  • Designer Paul Henningsen designed the Artichoke model for the Langelinie Pavillonen restaurant in Copenhagen. The first eight lamps still illuminate the interior of the restaurant.  

72 copper sheets are staggered to 12 steel hoops. The uniqueness and design feature of Artichoke is that no matter which side you look at it, the light source is not visible.

The original lamp weighing 25 kg is produced by the Danish Louis Poulsen factory in three versions made of steel, copper, white glass and in four sizes (from 48 to 84 cm in diameter).
