Turkmenistan’s gas production will double by 2050 to 150 billion cubic meters, according to the forecast made by Mohammed Hamel, Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).

“The development of large fields, such as the second-largest gas field in the world, combined with the expansion of the pipeline network, will allow Turkmenistan to almost double its current gas production, while, according to GECF forecasts, production could exceed 150 billion cubic meters by mid-century,” he said, speaking at the international forum on attracting foreign investment in the economy of Turkmenistan (TEIF 2025).

According to Hamel, thanks to its rapidly developing energy infrastructure, Turkmenistan is strengthening its ties with key regional markets, supplying natural gas to China, Central Asia, the Middle East, and in the future, possibly, Europe.

The GECF Secretary General noted that, according to the forum’s forecasts, China and India will be the two largest consumers of natural gas, together accounting for more than a third of the total consumption growth. “China’s gas consumption is expected to exceed 660 billion cubic meters by 2050, making it the second-largest consumer of natural gas in the world after the United States. In India, the share of natural gas in the national energy balance will increase, and demand is projected to more than double to approximately 230 billion cubic meters by 2050,” he said.

The volume of natural gas production in Turkmenistan by the end of 2024 amounted to 77.6 billion cubic meters.

The TEIF 2025 International Forum was held on April 23-24 in the capital of Malaysia. The event was attended by 470 delegates from 42 countries. The organizers were Turkmengas, Turkmennebit and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan in partnership with the Turkmen Energy Forum company.
