Three-time Olympic champion Buvaisar Saitiev dies at age 49

Three-time Olympic champion in freestyle wrestling Buvaisar Saitiev died in Moscow at the age of 50. The athlete died nine days before his 50th birthday.

This morning Saitiev felt unwell, complaining of a headache and weakness. After his condition worsened, relatives called an ambulance. At about 2 p.m., the wrestler was hospitalized in a Moscow hospital, where he later died.

According to the Telegram channel Mash, the preliminary cause of the athlete’s death could be cardiac arrest as a result of intoxication. Saitiev reportedly had lung problems and was taking strong medications to relieve pain.

The president of the Russian Wrestling Federation Mikhail Mamiashvili confirmed the information about the athlete’s death in a comment to TASS: “They called me ten minutes ago and said that such a disaster had happened. It’s hard to believe. We were supposed to fly together tomorrow.”

It is known that Buvaisar Saitiev planned to celebrate the upcoming anniversary with his family.
