The New York City government is discussing the possibility of introducing paid leave for employees with pets, snob.ru reports with reference to the New York Post.

The proposal came from representatives of the City Council. Among the active supporters of the initiative is Councilor Sean Abreu, who notes the positive impact of pets on the psychological and physical health of their owners. According to him, communication with animals helps reduce stress levels, encourages physical activity and expands social contacts.

According to Abreu, such a measure can have a positive effect on labor productivity by reducing the level of stress in workers. In addition, the innovation will help relieve the burden on city animal shelters, which are currently more than twice as full.

The bill provides for the provision of leave to owners of both service dogs and pets, subject to the necessary documents. Leave can be used to adapt a new pet, train it or visit a veterinary clinic.

According to a New York Post survey, city residents support this initiative. However, business representatives are concerned about a possible increase in personnel costs due to additional social guarantees.
